iOS 4 and Android 2.2 Froyo Comparison Battle

Well now that the new iPhone operating system has been shown at WWDC 2010, and has now for some reason been given an official name change from iPhone OS to iOS 4, how does the new OS stand up against the likes of the latest Android OS?

Well the guys over at Wired have done a comparison between both operating systems to see if iOS 4 is that far ahead of Android 2.2 Froyo.

So here goes…both do tethering, and multi-tasking, folders, copy and paste. Device wise iOS4 will work on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, the iPad in the fall, while the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch will gain iOS 4 with limited features. As for Android 2.2, it will more than likely come to the Motorola Droid and Nexus One.

Okay, now video chat, obviously iOS4 has it natively while Android 2.2 has to use add-on applications, the same goes for books, Android 2.2 does support Flash Player 10.1 but as you know Apple won’t allow Flash on any of their products.

Hotspot wise, Android 2.2 can share with up to 8 devices on WiFi, iOS 4 can’t. App wise, well we all know Apple has that one in the bag with 200,000 apps against 30,000 Android apps. As for email, iOS 4 has a unified inbox which combines multiple accounts while Android 2.2 doesn’t offer a unified inbox but can do threading in Gmail.

Music, well Apple has iTunes and streaming via apps, while Android streams music via add-on apps and has built in ability to play MP3 files.

So there it is all laid out for your scrutiny, so you can now make up your own mind as to which operating system actually comes out on top.

  1. Re: unified inbox.

In Android 2.1 on my Nexus One (and probably in 2.2 too – only a guess), there's a "combined inbox" in the email app. I've combined my gmail account and another account. Each account has a different color, and the messages are marked with a vertical bar in the corresponding color.

    Does that count?

You're a moron. Why? Because your comparisons of what Android doesn't have is all wrong and you haven't listed the 20 features which Android DOES have that iOS4 DOESN'T.

  3. The number of apps is really bad comparison and it's not really system comparison. iPhone is on the market for quite long time where Android is only really starting to show the full potential and it's glowing more and more every day. Also Apple is very closed minded what's effecting iPhone and apps. They started to limit developers on what they can do and develop. They are not different from what Microsoft was doing for long time, where now things are going a bit differen't. Android is way much better: devices are cheaper because system is cheap, multi device support, some have keyboard because android can support it, gmail contacts sync and is best thing ever, Android have desktop with backgroud + apps menu, better touch screen keyboard, flash support with 2.2 (YEAH!!!), devices have better camera, copy music and files from your computer to device (DONE! no need to use silly itunes). I can go with the list for whole day but i guess i won't make much difference. Soon, Android area, soon… Buahahahaha 🙂

You forgot that Android 2.2 comes with voice search baked in (despite what Jobs thinks, this feature alone make the phone more useful than an iPhone), real customization, WIDGETS, choice of carriers and phone makers (choice–freaking choice!), cloud computing, ability to push websites, driving directions, grocery lists, videos etc. etc. from the internet to your phone, as well communication between your phone and your Chrome browser, your Google TV, and your Android-based car computer. Further, Android is a completely open platform, it is more innovative with faster OS update iterations, apps have the ability to send crash reports, so as time goes by the apps get better, did I mention choice?

Look, I know I'm coming across as an phandroid–I'm just trying to show you that you REALLY overlooked android in your "OS comparison battle". Maybe you should add a few to the list.

Wow. Trust the Android fanboys to come out in packs. Face it, your device is inferior in the one aspect that really matters: an established community, especially in jailbreaking. With iDevices, the simple sheer number of people owning them means more apps, more features, and more functionality, if you take jailbreaking into account.

"the one aspect that really matters: an established community"

In which case Symbian wins hands down, an established community means nothing, give it 6 months and we'll see which has the greater established community. 200,000 apps, who cares as most of them are just gimmiks, apps that you would probably install, play with for 5 minutes and then either forget or delete.

I like the iphone and I like the iphone os (to a point), but the fact that you have to combine both and you have to sync with itunes will ultimately be the downfall of both.

    Get a grip Anon,

I don't own either an iPhone or an Android yet, but your reasoning is seriously flawed.

The iPhone has many more users and apps because it's been out longer PERIOD. The Android is coming on strong with sales per quarter VERY close to the iPhone's, in a much shorter time period. Google is also running an agressive free phone incentive to top developers. You also get to choose your carrier with the Android. Try that with your iPhone.

With the Android OS being Open Source, It attracts manufacturers (higher profit margins), as well as, developers (it's almost free ($25) to develop for it, and us users that just naturally gravitate toward Open Source software that's done well.

Watchout Apple and Blackberry, the Android may just be the start of a smartphone revolution.

The iPhone is more than the sum of its parts – it started a revolution in smartphones – who knew we all needed data plans! its the iPhone that did that! Its the iPhone that make the glass screen and wonderful touch interface the standard. Its the iPhone that started the mobile app revolution. The two Android phones I have played with the Moto Droid and the Nexus One do not measure up to the iPhone – the touch interface on both of them sucks, there is no coherence in the UI and the quality of the apps are just not on par with the ones on the iPhone. The iPhone was the first Apple product I bought – now we have a few iPods, an iPad and a MacBook Pro. Call me fanboi!!

  10. James says:

I’ve owned a 3g and I’m currently using a Moto Droid to type this. Having used/owned both, and having enjoyed both Android and the iOS, you couldn’t pay me to go back to AT&T/iPhone. Jailbroken vs a rooted, oc’d Droid running Froyo is no comparison.

I will admit I’m an Apple fanboy, but there is no argument here. Other than a better on-screen keyboard, which I do occasionally miss, there is zero chance the iPhone 4 could displace my Droid.
