It has been rumoured delays are hitting Google’s Android handset, but apparently, despite all the rumours over the net waves Google seem to be right on track for an end of year release. Apparently Google did say they would begin shipping the first Android mobile phone later this year, and The Wall Street Journal published an article that cited unnamed sources saying Google’s Android mobile may be facing delays due to problems by T-Mobile and Sprint Nextel, and that the Google Android may not be seen until 09.
Google set the second half of 08 as the possible release date which means we should see it by the year’s end and so that means there is no delay what so ever. Google have refuted any delay in the Android based mobile phone’s dates, saying: “We remain on schedule to deliver the first Android-based handset in the second half of 2008.”
Furthermore, a Google spokesperson sent an email to BetaNews which said: “We’re very excited to see the momentum continuing to build behind the Android platform among carriers, handset manufacturers, developers and consumers.”
Something to note is that Sprint has not publically said they have any intensions of releasing an Android mobile phone any time in 08.
So what about that Apple iPhone growth threatened by Google Android? Well although the latest Apple iphone 3G is the big news there is a hint that Google Android could possibly threaten the iPhone’s growth potential. As we know the Android is open source and is backed by over 30 partners and therefore holds the potential to become to mobile phones what Google has become to the internet. Google will undoubtedly deploy ads on mobile phones and generate huge revenues, so should Apple start worrying?
Google is striving to make Android work on a variety of carriers and mobile handsets; this is probably why the delay rumours spouted up, but that is now old news. It is possible that Google could well dominate, and that could possibly make the Apple iPhone old news as well.
Google along with Apple has a huge deep wallet, Apple’s goal is 10 million iPhone 3G’s by the year’s end, but if Google succeeds in getting the Android OS across numerous hardware platforms then they will obviously have a much wider market, which could well mean stumping the growth of the iPhone.
So on the grand scale of things; even if there was a delay in Google Android it wouldn’t make any difference in the overall picture. So what is your view on this? Could the Google Android threaten the ever popular Apple iPhone growth?
