BT plans £1.5 billion programme, 100Mbps UK broadband at Gigabit speeds

BT (British Telecom) has some amazing plans in the pipe-line; they have just announced its brand new £1.5 billion programme to give up to 10 million homes access to fibre by 2012.

BT are hoping that they will have as many as 10 million homes which is around 40 percent of UK wired up for a better service with speeds up to 100Mbps.

The new plan is dependent on regulatory regime and certainty and dividend guidance reaffirmed, share buyback suspended from July 31 2008.

The plan is to potentially give customers capabilities of 1,000Mbps (1Gbps) at some unspecified point in the future, they plan to deliver 100Mbps direct to new homes or 40Mbps (and possibly 60Mbps as they test new technology) to homes with a copper link to the fibre cabinet.

Now if all this comes off, we can see a much better future with speeds that will be a part of future technology which of course will help us immensely, faster speeds is always a good thing.
