As of August 2008 the mobile communications service in China had 616.02 million subscribers, a growth of 1.26 percent on month and a growth of 19.46 percent on the year.
These statistics were published by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the number of subscribers at the end of August accounted for 45.6 percent of China’s population.
Mobile phone subscribers in China in August 08 sent 57.31 billion text messages which equates to 3.02 messages per day, while there were 354.07 million fixed telecommunication network subscribers which translates to a user density of 27 percent.
