The Palm Pre may soon be with us, and with it comes a new step in the world of smartphone charging in the form of the wireless charger. Sfgate reports that Palm is the 1st smartphone maker to integrate wireless charging into their products in the form of the Touchstone charger.

The Touchstone charger ushers in a new era of wireless charging, and analyst Ross Rubin of NPD says virtually any surface could be transformed into a charging pad and could usher in a whole new level of convenience and extended battery life as products are charged passively.

Obviously the Touchstone charger will only work with the Palm Pre on launch and the Pre will connect to the Touchstone via magnets and the puck shaped device can tell when it’s being charged and will then offer a speakerphone option for incoming calls.
