iTunes number 1 for music: 25% of unit sales for first half of 2009
Reports from NPD market research firm state that Apple’s iTunes was the top music retailer in the U.S for the first part of 2009 with a massive 25% of unit sales.
This is an increase from 2008 of 21% and a 14% increase from 2007. Walmart remains in second position with 14% of the volume of music sold at their stores and web sites, in third pace is Best Buy.
The music industry continues to see a slump in sales from Cds to digital downloads, with the downloads now accounting for a staggering 35% of total sales. It is therefore not suprising to us to learn that iTunes easily claimed the top spot as they have continued to lead the digital download market since 2003. Source – macrumors.com
