Overseas mobile phone suppliers may be banned in India?
According to an article on the India Times, the Indian government are now to revive plans whereby overseas telecom equipment vendors such as mobile phone suppliers will be required to undergo and pass stringent security tests in a test bed controlled by the government prior to selling to any operator in India.
The test centre is to be modelled on the China Information Technology Certification Centre and the proposal may be a compromise to address security concerns with Chinese mobile phone vendors like ZTE and Huawei which are currently garnering the bulk of supply deals in the India telecom space.
Apparently Indian telecom operators are voicing concerns and are opposed to any move by the Indian government to ban Chinese equipment suppliers.
