Japan working of Anti-piracy mobile phone software

Apparently Japan is looking to fight pirated music in the mobile phone arena if a world’s first system for blocking illegally copies music is approved in Tokyo talks next week and installed on every mobile phone in Japan reports the FT.

The negotiations are taking place between mobile phone companies, music download websites and the Recording Industry Association of Japan with a view to agreeing the new anti-piracy measures by the year’s end and could be in place by 2011.

Under the proposed software install, when someone tries to play a song, software in their mobile phone would contact a security server to find out if the song is covered by copyright and if the handset doesn’t have the required code that says it was purchase legally the song will not play.
