Entire Orchestra from iPhone apps

A group of students from the University of Michigan have managed to create an entire orchestra with their iPhones just from using their separate iPhone applications.

The group from the university built the applications themselves and also composed the music for them. Some of the applications do sound like traditional instruments that you would expect to hear at any orchestra, however, there are some that don’t and sound totally unique.

The Apple iPhone handsets are fastened to speakers which are then attached to their wrists. There is a live concert planned for the 9th December. The concert will mark the end of the three month course which has been run by Australian computer scientist and musician Georg Essl.

Speaking to the BBC Essl said that the concept of using computers to make music was not new, the rise of smartphones had made the idea more practical. Unlike traditional instruments, iPhones do not have to be physically modified for sound. To find out and read more on this amazing and fascinating story then visit news.bbc.co.uk
