As you may be aware when Motorola decided to go with Droid as the name for their smartphone they licensed the name from Star Wars creator George Lucas; unfortunately this doesn’t seem to be the case with Google and their Nexus One.
According to an article on the New York Times, it is believed that the name Nexus One is in reference to the cyborgs of Blade Runner which was based on the novel ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sleep?’ by Philip K Dick in which are featured the Nexus-6 cyborgs.
Apparently the word is that Google didn’t go the same route as Motorola with their Droid, and as such the Philip K Dick Estate isn’t too please as the president of Electric Shepherd Productions, Ms. Hackett has stated that “In my mind, there is a very obvious connection to my father’s novel.”
Apparently Goggle declined to comment on any names they may or may not use to market their Google phone, but Ms. Hackett has said that she is talking with lawyers, and that they would have been open to discussion had Google reached out.
