Nokia has launched a range of free turn by turn navigation software for Nokia mobile phones and essentially joins Google in placing even more pressure on navigation device manufacturer TomTom.
According to an article over on the WSJ, the exec VP of markets for Nokia, Anssi Vanjoki, during an interview said that the new navigation software will be free of charge and feature new graphics, travel guides and downloadable maps from the Nokia website in over 180 countries.
Industry watchers have stated that Nokia needs to ramp up their service offering and launch more high end devices so they can win back lost ground. Vanjoki also said that navigation is a key part of Nokia’s overall service offering.
So there you go, Nokia launches a new turn by turn navigation software for free which is bound to tread on the navigation toes of the likes of TomTom who have also seem Google snap up a portion of their business in the past, its got to hurt TomTom some.
