During the CTIA 2010 keynote with Sprint CEO Dan Hesse and Clearwire CEO Bill Morrow, apparently Morrow remarked that he was not interested in waging a war between WiMAX and LTE and suggested that WiMAX is built to add LTE if required reports an article on Reuters via Engadget.
This in turn suggests there is a future possibility of both WiMAX and LTE becoming one. However later in the day it was Verizon Wireless’ turn to take to the stage during Verizon’s LTE roundtable.
When someone asked the question whether LTE and WiMAX could become one, Tony Melone, Verizon CTO gave his opinion on the matter by saying that it will never happen and the “only big happy family” he knows of is the 3GPP to LTE team of which Verizon is a member.
Apparently Melone wouldn’t elaborate further on any whys or what’s, but noted that it was his “frank opinion” based on his knowledge in the field. So there it is, looks like there will be no teaming of LTE and WiMAX for the foreseeable future anyway.
