Factory workers in China who work for Hon Hai Precision Industry Co, which also uses the trade name Foxconn, may see their wages increase as Hon Hai considers upping wages, but has said it has nothing to do with the suicides at their Shenzhen operation.
According to an article over on the Wall Street Journal, by Ting-i Tsai, a spokesperson for Hon Hai has denied reports that at least one newspaper in China has reports Terry Gou, the chairman of Hon Hai has said that the firm would increase the minimum wage by 20 percent.
The monthly salary of workers at the Longhua facility in Shenzhen is 900 yuan which is roughly $132 and the legal minimum wage; however most employees work overtime as they can gain one and a half times the standard hourly rate.
As you are probably aware there have been quite a few suicides since January at Foxconn, but apparently the wage change discussion predates the deaths at Foxconn which makes the iPhone, iPad and Macbook for Apple and other products for such companies as Dell, Nintendo and HP, some of which are investigating the suicides.
