With the release of the much hyped HTC EVO 4G the smartphone world gains video chat capabilities utilising the handset’s front facing camera and an application known as Qik. Now the thing is Qik’s two-ay video service is not available yet.
However according to Noah Kravitz over at Phone Dog this little problem didn’t stop him from making a video call using the HTC EVO 4G as he used Fring which is a rival application to get the job done.
Apparently Noah managed to video chat with “Rod” of Mobile Burn for approximately 4 minutes, both used Fring on the HTC EVO 4G with Noah in Oakland CA. and Rod in New York City and the video chat was done over 3G as currently there is no 4G connectivity in those areas.
So how did it go? Well according to Noah, a few calls were dropped before gaining a connection along with a few seconds of muted audio, but once connection was established the quality was acceptable. Imaged were a tad pixelated and laggy and out of sync with the audio but on the whole the experience was good enough to tell people about, but isn’t as good as Skype or iChat on a PC.
