Today will be all about Apple and the iPhone 4G at WWDC 2010, and in the past such events from Apple have had it all their own way, but now there is a new smartphone that looks to be challenging Apple for their mobile arena glory in the form of the HTC EVO 4G.
Is Apple dominance of the mobile arena numbered now that HTC is grabbing quite a bit of notoriety? According to a recent article over on the Wall Street Journal by Niraj Sheth and Roger Cheng, HTC has built a reputation for solid hardware and sleek designs and now has 3 flagship handsets with the top 4 carriers in the US.
Yes, today the world’s eyes will be on WWDC 2010 and the next generation iPhone, the iPhone 4G, but apparently several reviewers agree that HTC comes closes to giving Apple a run for their money and the manager of Sprint’s phone section, Lois Fagan has said, “Where there used to be nothing, now they’re a force to be reckoned with.”
The new HTC EVO 4G smartphone on Sprint has now become Sprint’s biggest selling launch day device, which goes a fair way to say just how popular the first 4G capable handset is, and of course currently the iPhone 4G is getting fairly smashed in our popularity poll, which you can add your own vote too (here)
According to the senior VP at Verizon Wireless, John Harrobin,”HTC has really stepped up its software and device capabilities. This bodes well for working more closely with them.”
So finally Apple and their iPhone appears to have a credibly challenger for the “king of smartphones” crown, all that really remains is to see if the iPhone 4G release can actually pull back some of that lost glory for Apple and hold onto their title, which we should find out over the next couple of days.
If the HTC EVO 4G maintains dominance when the iPhone 4G is released, what can Apple do? Well there is always a possibility of opening up the iPhone to other carriers and finally deliver the much sort after Verzion iPhone which could just be the thing to put the iPhone back at the top.
