iPhone Reception, AT&T Network or Apple Fault?

Apparently the iconic iPhone has always had a reception problem and Apple has been aware of this since the first iPhone, but it hasn’t come drastically under the spotlight until the release of the new iPhone 4 and its redesigned antenna.

Recently Apple issued an open letter saying that the fault was due to the iPhone not showing the real bar strength and thus giving a false impression that the iPhone was receiving good signal strength, that’s how I figure it anyway.

The Wall Street Journal recently published a video giving a reasonable explanation of the situation which you can view below and while I was watching said video it raised a question about the iPhone and AT&T in as much that if the iPhone has always had this signal issue, is AT&T really to blame for poor reception?

It seems to me that for once Apple has held up their hands and said we are to blame whereas in the past AT&T has always had to shoulder the blame for all the crap associated with iPhone signal so just maybe AT&T have been receiving a bit of a rough deal when it comes to iPhone complaints, perhaps AT&T has been taking most of the flak to cover Apple’s ass. Check out the video below and let me know your thoughts by dropping us a comment below…thanks.

A week ago, I went into my local Apple store here in the UK to have a look at the new iPhone. I am left-handed.

It is stunning, and everything that I have stood by Apple for over more than twenty years.

But……it does not work properly when holding it in my usual way with the left hand to make calls. The signal locally there is extremely good, and always has been. Despite this, the signal strength and the eventually the call, just disappeared! However, using the right hand in just the same way was fine.

This is not a minor software hiccup, it is a fundamental design fault, not related to low signal strength areas. It is a fault.

Of course, it could just be the 'every phone suffers from reception issues' problem but I have owned many mobiles, and not one has suffered this massive level of degradation in normal use in a very strong signal area.

If I wrap my hands completely encasing my little HTC touch in the same store, it retains a bit of signal! Simply holding the iPhone 4 in a conventional way and i get nothing!

Come on Apple. Admit the fault. Steve Jobs, make the relevant heads roll. Do not just sit back arrogantly and assume you are beyond reputational damage.
