RIM BlackBerry to Address Security Concerns in India
At the moment Research In Motion doesn’t allow the Indian government to monitor BlackBerry emails and SMS’s and this is seen as a security issue by the Indian government and they want Research In Motion to allow them to do so or they will close down operations in India.
According to an article over on Zee News, Research In Motion has now apparently given the Indian government their assurance they will address the security issues. Special Security in the MHA Utthan Kumar Bansal told reporters…”BlackBerry has assured the Ministry of Home Affairs that the issue of monitoring of the BlackBerry will be sorted out soon…I am sure we will soon be on the same page and our concerns will be addressed.”
Apparently India’s MHA have asked the Department of Telecommunications to tell Research In Motion that their email and other data services must comply to formats which can be monitored by the Indian intelligence and security agencies.
The Indian government wants a BlackBerry server in India as it will make monitoring easier; however Research In Motion is apparently resisting such a move. According to the MHA, RIM has addressed security concerns in other countries such as the US and thus sees no reason why the BlackBerry maker shouldn’t do the same in India.
Apparently key Indian officials within the security agencies have stated that in its present state, continuing with BlackBerry services poses a danger to the country.
