Remember long ago, way back in October 2009, Nokia sued Apple over ten patents they said Apple infringed upon, and then Apple retaliated in the December of the same year by counter suing Nokia and upping the ante with thirteen alleged iPhone patent infringement? Well apparently that long tiff between the two smartphone giants has now come to an end.
According to an article over on Cnet, both companies have reached an agreement to end the legal wrangle that saw Nokia escalate the dispute even further by filing a complaint with the US International Trade Commission stating that the iOS company infringes on most of all Nokia gear.
Well the word has come down that Apple has capitulated and agreed to license mobile phone patents own by Nokia and apparently the deal will end all disputes between the two with both companies withdrawing their complaints to the US ITC.
Nokia released a statement in which Nokia CEO Stephen Elop says, “We are very pleased to have Apple join the growing number of Nokia licensees. This settlement demonstrates Nokia’s industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market.”
Word is Apple is to shell out an undisclosed one off fee to Nokia along with continuing royalties for the use of their patents, and on request for any comment Apple was unavailable to comment.
