So the new Apple iPhone 4S was announced last night and releasing October 14th, but is it as good as the Samsung Galaxy S2 that is already out there. Is this the case of the of the iPhone 4S lags behind the SGS2?
So how does the iPhone 4S stack up to the Samsung Galaxy S2 (SII), well we have decided to put the two together as well as a few other tit-bits like the voice control to see why the iPhone 4S lags behind.
The reason we have done this comparison is all down to the Samsung Galaxy S2 being Samsung’s best selling smartphone, well up until the Nexus Prime and Galaxy S3 is released that is.
The iPhone 4S has new features granted, but are these features outdated? This is something many have said over on my Google+ page, the comments are coming in thick and fast since the iPhone 4S announcement. So let’s see how this pans out, please read on.
One comment came in via Google+ with a list of 5 features, the iPhone 4S comes with 1080p that is already on the SGS2, both smartphones have an 8-MP camera, when it comes to the processor both are very good indeed (More about this below), the camera access via the lock screen is already available on the SGS2. Now we get down to the nitty-gritty.
The iPhone 4S has the A5 dual-core processor, and the SGS2 has the ARM Cortex A9 Exynos dual-core 1.2GHz processor, would have to say this is about equal on performance and speed.
When it comes to the cameras, both smartphones has the 8-megapixel numbers, and both have 1080p HD video recording. The iPhone 4S might win this section thanks to the video stabilization and noise cancellation.
The iPhone 4S has a front VGA camera and video that gives up to 30 frames per second, the SGS2 has a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. The iPhone 4S can video call thanks to FaceTime whereas the SGS2 uses Google Talk with Video as well as help from apps such as Skype and Tango.
The SGS2 features the 16GB model only with a MicroSD card slot; total storage for the SGS2 is 48GB. The iPhone 4S features 3 versions at 16GB, 32GB and the 64GB, but does not come with a MicroSD card slot, so nothing really exciting for the iPhone 4S.
Ok so what about the display then? Well, the iPhone 4S has a 3.5-inch Retina Display featuring 960 x 640 pixel resolution at 326 ppi, on the other hand the Samsung Galaxy S II features a 4.3-inch (4.52 for the Sprint Epic 4G Touch and T-Mobile USA’s Galaxy S II) AMOLED Plus screen, with 217 ppi for the 4.3-inch screen and 206 ppi for the 4.52-inch screen (resolution of 480 x 800). The iPhone 4S has a much crisper image but unless you are a screen geek not that much difference to jump for joy for the iPhone 4S.
How does the data speed stack up: The iPhone 4S supports up to 14.4Mbps download, which is a lot faster than the current iPhone 4. However the SGS2 is HSPA+ ready and produces 21Mbps download speed, what do you favour?
The battery life on the Samsung Galaxy S II Global phone provides up to 610 hours on 3G standby time, 710 hours on 2G, as well as 8 hours 40 min on talk time on 3G and talk time of 18 hours and 20 min max on 2G and around 5 to 6 hours internet time. The iPhone 4S offers 200 hours on standby on 3G and talk time is 8 hours on 3G, 14 hours on 2G GSM, if you use the internet you can expect 9 hours max on Wi-Fi and up to 6 hours on 3G. So the SGS2 is better here.
When it comes to the voice assistants on these devices, will they really be used? If you head on over to Phandroid they have hot upon this subject, the iPhone 4S will come fitted with the new voice recognition service aka Siri, which will release on other iPhones with iOS 5.
But Phandroid asked its readers if anyone really uses it by asking this question “How Often Do You Use Voice Actions On Android?” the results were very interesting indeed, here are the stats on their poll: Frequently 20.13% (653 votes), Rarely 33.23% (1,078 votes), Never 29.59% (960 votes), Only While Driving 13.1% (425 votes), and Only if it performed like Siri 3.95% (128 votes).
So if Android users out there rarely use the voice assistant, will iOS users use the Siri service or will it be a novelty?
Phones Review, The Bottom Line: We will say it how it is, so please do not come knocking on our door with pick axes (Lol). We use both iOS and Android devices, but and a big BUT is the fact that Apple’s software and hardware work very well together, Android devices cannot compete with the way Apple products talk with each other.
There are a few changes with the new iPhone 4S, but trust us when we say, “We did not fall of our chair with amazement”, we will still get one though just to review it. When you look at the comparison between the two handsets about there is not much difference in features, so this stands to reason that the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Samsung Nexus Prime will be the phones to have.
When Apple says the iPhone 4S has new features, they are telling you the truth because it does, but when you compare the iPhone 4S features with other phones such as the SGS2, you have to admit that the features are not new as an overall.
Please do get you comments in, really looking forward to seeing what you have to say about the above comparison. Thanks
