When it comes to the development of the Thunderbolt interconnect technology it was thought that Apple would have a backseat in the collaboration with Intel; however it is looking like Apple just might be becoming more involved with Thunderbolt that might see the Thunderbolt port popping up on iOS devices at some point in the future.
According to an article over on ZDnet by way of Patently Apple, three new Apple patents have been published by the USPTO that detail aspects of the Thunderbolt I/O technology.
Apparently these new patent applications means that Apple is focusing on bringing Thunderbolt tech to their iOS devices, with a view to delivering speedier recharging of the iPhone and Apple iPad along with faster syncing of data.
Apple states in the secondary patent application that “a connection may be provided between a portable media player and a display, a computer and a portable media player, or between other types of devices.”
So if this is to apply to iOS devices in future it means Apple will need to reengineer the connector so it is flat enough to fit an USB style slot, something that Apple has previously been working on and would mean the transfer of data to and from an iOS device would be “lightening fast as would recharging.”
Now personally I’m not into all the tech speak involved in patents Apple or otherwise, so if you wish to check out the three Apple patens you can do so by hitting up Patently Apple.
