Windows Phone Skype app lacks deep integration
If you are one of the Windows Phone faithful out there waiting on Microsoft to deliver Skype integration for Windows Phones, the word is Windows Phone Skype is on its way soon. During CES 2012 apparently Rick Osterloh, the VP of products for Microsoft revealed that the company’s Skype division is “working on a Windows Phone product that will be coming soon.”
According to a report by the guys over on The Verge, after acquiring the voice and video service back in October 2011 Microsoft has been somewhat tight lipped and refused to comment on their Skype plans.
Originally, the director of the Windows Phone program, Joe Belfiore had promised Skype would arrive on Windows Phone sometime late last year but that has obviously now passed along with no confirmation of just when Skype would come to the platform from Microsoft.
According to The Verge sources apparently Skype will not come with deep integration on Windows Phone because Microsoft plans that deep integration to surface in “Apollo” and beyond, and thus the first Windows Phone Skype app will be basically an interim release.
The Skype for Windows Phone app was demonstrated during MIX 2011, which shows that the app had a familiar look and feel to what was originally shown, and the hope is although Microsoft hasn’t given any timing for its release, hopefully Windows Phone Skype may see release in Barcelona in February at Mobile World Congress 2012, then again it might not.
