A few days ago a leaked Sony Ericsson road map showed up on the net and on that list of 2012 devices was the Sony Ericsson Kumquat and Sony Ericsson Nypon, along with the Sony Ericsson Pepper and it is expected that these devices will be officially announced during Mobile World Congress 2012 next month; however there seems to be a bit of confusion over the Kumquat.
According to the Xperia Blog, they have the first image of the Sony Ericsson ST25i Kumquat that shows that the Xperia Kumquat resembles the Sony Xperia S in its design with the transparent antenna bar and resembles the Sony Ericsson LT22i Nypon.
The Kumquat and Nypon look so much alike that the guys thought they were looking at the same handset, but apparently the screen resolution is the main difference with the Nypon having a qHD 540 x 960 resolution whilst the Kumquat sports a FWGA 480 x 854 resolution.
However there’s more, as according top another article by the Xperia Blog, an Indonesian site has a couple of Sony Ericsson handsets showing up, the Sony Xperia S and the Sony Ericsson Xperia U, with the Xperia U being referenced as the ST25i.
So is the Xperia ST25i Kumquat actually going to surface as the Xperia ST251 U? The guy’s say this is quite possible as the Xperia S used a single letter so why not have two devises using a single letter and the fact that it is a regulatory body that has referenced them although they have no idea what the ‘S’ or ‘U’ refers to.
Having said that, the thing I find more confusing and I figure most are finding the same is whether to call these devices Sony or Sony Ericsson handsets, as several people have contacted me and said we shouldn’t be referring to these devices as a Sony Ericsson device but rather a Sony device.
I have heard that the split between Sony and Ericsson doesn’t actually happen until mid-year; so until the slit is completed I figure we’ll still be seeing both Sony and Sony Ericsson branded devices for now, but your guess is as good as mine as to whether which device will surface as a Sony only device.
