Earlier this month we gave readers news about the LG Optimus Vu Android smartphone. This will have a larger screen in the ilk of the Samsung Galaxy Note and we expected to find out more at MWC later this month. However it seems LG has jumped the gun, such is its excitement about this latest product, and has now officially unveiled the Optimus Vu so we have further information on particulars and specs.
Although the Optimus Vu may have some people wondering if it’s a small tablet or a large smartphone that dilemma doesn’t seem to have affected the popularity of Samsung’s Galaxy Note so LG could have a hit on its hands with the Optimus Vu. We’ve given some specs previously and with the further details can tell you that the Optimus Vu includes a 5-inch IPS LCD display with resolution of 1024×768, a 4:3 aspect ratio for optimum readability, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of internal memory,1.5GHz dual-core processor, 8-megapixel rear camera with AF LED flash and 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera.
The Optimus Vu will also have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, HDMI, DLNA, NFC capability, LTE connectivity and a 2080mAh battery but one drawback is that it will be launched running the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system rather than 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. However LG now pledges that there will be an upgrade to ICS within 3 months of launch, set in Korea for March. At Mobile World Congress we hope to hear more details on an international release.
Another clever feature of the Optimus Vu is a QuickClip hotkey for instant capture of screenshots and memos. As we expected, the Optimus Vu will also come with a stylus or as LG call it, “a dedicated Rubberdium pen.” Engadget has the official press release which gives dimensions for the Optimus Vu as 139.6mm x 90.4mm x 8.5mm so this is an exceptionally slim device, especially as it has that LTE support. It weighs a light 168g. If you want to take a look at the Optimus Vu you can view a short video below this story.
We’d like to hear your thoughts on the Optimus Vu. If it were to launch in your region would you be tempted to purchase? Perhaps you like the idea of a 5-inch display, or maybe feel this is simply too big to be a smartphone? Why not let us know by giving us your comments.
