Differences between iPhone and the Samsung Galaxy S3

One of the most eagerly anticipated smartphones for 2012 is the Samsung Galaxy S3. Cell phone enthusiasts who are expecting it to match the iPhone feature for feature may be surprised to learn that early reports indicate otherwise. While the two phones will share some similarities, they will also offer users some significant difference in terms of both performance and functionality.

The below is based on the assumption of what the Galaxy S3 will feature, this was written by a guest blogger.

Pros and cons of the Samsung Galaxy S3

The current iPhone available is the 4S, which offers a dual-core processor running at 800 MHz. The Galaxy 3S is expected to be more than twice as fast, operating at 1.8 GHz. The Galaxy S3 will also offer 2GB of RAM, compared to the single gigabyte provided by the iPhone.

The Samsung Galaxy S3 will also offer other hardware advantages over the iPhone, including a camera featuring 50% more megapixels. Both phones will come standard with HSDPA, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth communication protocols, but the S3 will also offer NFC, or near field communications, which will allow tech enthusiasts to use their phone as a “mobile wallet” at participating retailers.

The S3 is less user-friendly when it comes to synchronization of data such as calendar entries, contacts, and documents. While the iPhone offers full integration using their iCloud interface, the S3 needs external applications to synchronize with programs outside of the Google umbrella.

Pros and cons of the iPhone

The iPhone allows users to integrate with Twitter, while the S3 provides easy integration with both Twitter and Facebook. Some of the largest drawbacks of the iPhone, however, relate to its closed architecture. While the S3 is based on open source software, the iPhone platform is proprietary.

This same approach extends to hardware as well. The S3 allows end users to change the ROM if desired. The iPhone is designed to discourage this. Both phones offer GPS, but the usefulness of the geo-location system differs on the two systems because the S3’s screen is more than a full inch larger and offers HD resolution. The iPhone screen is 3.5 inches with a resolution of 640 x 960.

The iPhone, however, is a known quantity with a large and enthusiastic user base. The S3 may not become equally popular.

The issue of apps

S3 users will be able to download apps from several sources including the Android Marketplace, Samsung and Google. Apps for the iPhone are only available from their own online shop. However, there are more than 400,000 apps available for the iPhone at present but just 250,000 available from Android.

The S3 will ship with built-in custom apps from Google as well as Samsung. This may help to address some of the quality control issues Android users have expressed in the past. While Apple verifies each app sold on in their App Store, the Android Marketplace has at times featured apps that caused users problems or failed to work as advertised.

Find excellent deals online

Seeing a phone in person before buying can be helpful, particularly to those who are new to smartphones, but it is not the way to get the best possible deal. Experienced phone buyers always look for the best possible deals, and there are already some sites out there that have the Samsung Galaxy S3 deals in place, ready for when the handset releases
