Many owners of Sony Tablet S and Tablet P devices will be pleased to hear today that the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update will be with you very soon. In other news we can also tell you that Sony has announced the release of the WiFi-only version of the Tablet P.
A while ago we informed readers that the Android ICS update for the Tablet S and Tablet P was due in the spring and today we have firmer news on that. Sony has now announced that both of the above tablets will receive the 4.0.3 ICS update in late April. This will be music to the ears of many of you who can’t wait to taste the Ice Cream Sandwich user interface. As well as this the update will also bring improved photo features such as camera operation directly from the lock screen, photo editing in the gallery app and the ability to take panoramic photographs.
News of the Sony announcements (1) and (2) came to us from The Verge and other additions from the update include the ability to view programs recorded from compatible Sony Blu-Rays on the Sony tablets with a downloadable app. “Small Apps” is another extra which will enable the user to launch some apps on top of another currently in use.
As well as the ICS news Sony also announced the WiFi-only Tablet P with a release on April 21 and a price of Â¥50,000 (around $600). Specs are the same as the Tablet P previously released except of course there’s no 3G radio. Another offering from Samsung on April 21 comes in the way of colored interchangeable front and back panels for the Tablet P in gold, pink and blue at a price of Â¥5,000 (around $60).
Interestingly over on Engadget it’s pointed out that although this announcement of the ICS update has been made by Sony Japan, there’s no way of knowing whether this is just for Japan or other regions too. The same applies to release information for the Sony Tablet P WiFi-only version so you may want to bear that in mind. If we hear more on this we’ll pass on the information. Are you waiting for the ICS update for your Sony Tablet S or Tablet P?
