Last week we gave you the news that the HTC Vivid had begun receiving Android Ice Cream Sandwich from AT&T, as the list of smartphones on the platform being updated is finally growing. Today we have news that the Galaxy S II Skyrocket is joining the Android ICS party following a leak.
The smartphone first became available on the carrier earlier this year and came running the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system. Samsung has been slowly pushing out the software upgrade to its handsets, which is slightly surprising how long it is taking considering they were responsible for the Galaxy Nexus that debuted the software.
Samsung’s Skyrocket is among the range of S2 devices due to receive the new operating system or already have it, but for those that own the Skyrocket and were worried they would never see Android ICS, the official build for the device has been around since March 14th according to SlashGear.
The software has yet to be released officially but RootzWiki has managed to get hold of an early version of the operating system. Heading over to the website you can get hold of the update yourself along with full installation instructions and download mirrors. Unfortunately it won’t work on the Galaxy S II Skyrocket on the Rogers and T-Mobile networks, but does bring the likes of NFC and Google Wallet to AT&T handsets.
Meanwhile users of the standard Galaxy S2 in the UK are still being left frustrated with the wait for the upgrade to arrive. The update was due to release on the 19th of March but it seems that only some users have received it so far, and these mainly seem to be customers of the Three network.
Unusually owners of SIM free versions of the handset are still waiting for the update to arrive, and currently there is no news from Samsung about the rollout of the software.
