The Samsung Galaxy S3 (S III) is one of the most anticipated smartphones of the year although there are divided opinions as to when it may be released. Many specs and features have been rumored and leaked and now we have news that backs up a higher resolution display to rival that of the iPhone and a release date timeframe of Q2 or Q3.
We’ve now heard and reported so much about the Galaxy S3 that we feel we have a good idea of what’s coming but of course none of us can really be sure until Samsung chooses to announce the phone. Features and specs widely reported though, along with news from reliable sources, suggests a quad-core Exynos processor, a larger 4.6 or 4.8-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, 10 or even 12-megapixel rear camera, 1GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, NFC and LTE connectivity, all running on the latest Android mobile OS, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
One of the most hotly rumored features is a step up in display size from the Galaxy S2’s 4.3-inch display along with a higher resolution and that has now been reinforced with news from Taiwanese newpaper DigiTimes, brought to our attention by Digital Spy. Supply chain sources say that the Galaxy S3 will have a 4.6-inch Super AMOLED HD Plus display with a pixel density of 319ppi, really competing with Apple’s iPhone. The iPhone 4S has a pixel density of 326 ppi and many who favor the Galaxy S smartphones will be very satisfied to hear of the likelihood that the S3 will have such an improved display.
AMOLED displays are popular with Samsung because the technology involved offers faster response times, saves on power consumption and means smartphones can be kept slim and light when compared to LCD displays. However the cost of AMOLED technology is more expensive but as more manufactures opt for the benefits of these displays the more likely it is that the costs will come down.
As far as the release date of the Galaxy S3 the same sources told of a Q2 or Q3 release. There has been plenty of conjecture about this and we’ve been hearing timeframes of anywhere between April and July and recently talk of an event on May 22 to announce the Galaxy S3 has been rife. If that proved accurate then a release could come shortly afterwards so we would hope that the release will still be in Q2 rather than the Q3 mentioned. We know from comments received after our previous posts on the Galaxy S3 that many of you are avidly waiting for a release as soon as possible.
Tell us what your thoughts are on news of a Galaxy S3 display that will rival that of the iPhone’s? Have you already decided to purchase the Galaxy S3 anyway or will news of an improved and larger display sway your decision?
