Just a few days ago we were singing the praises of the Viddy app for iOS devices. For those of you who have not yet heard of Viddy this app allows users to capture and share videos with others in the Viddy community and also through the usual social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Now we have news that this increasingly popular app is gaining celebrity backing.
The Viddy company is only one year old and the app saw an upsurge of interest in February when it integrated with Facebook’s Open Graph for Timeline and Ticker. However the app has seen an even greater surge over the last week or so. Eleven days ago Viddy went past 4.5 million users but in that short space of time registered users have more than doubled, rocketing to more than 10 million, probably due to it being the number one free app in the App Store for almost a week.
The growing popularity of the social video app has now attracted attention from Hollywood where a host of celebrities are endorsing the company. As well as tech investors, high-profile celebs such as Will Smith, Shakira and Jay-Z are rushing to become part of the Viddy action. VentureBeat reports that Viddy spoke yesterday about the interest in the app from investors and partners.
Apart from Jay-Z’s Roc Nation and Will Smith’s Overbook Entertainment other big names mentioned were footballer Gerard Pique, skateboarding star Rob Dyrdek and chairman of Skull Candy, Jeff Kearl. Add to these the names of Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, Josh James, Omniture founder and Brian Lee, Shoedazzle founder and you’ve got some serious names now backing Viddy.
Viddy has declined to say which of these names are investors and which are partners but it’s safe to say the company is likely to have completed its Series A offering where funding stood at $5.75 million of $6 in back in February. There seems to be no stopping Viddy at the moment and who knows, it could be the next Instagram as far as app success is concerned.
