There will be many of us that have used the BBC iPlayer in the past or are regular users of the service that allows us to catch up with our favourite shows from the broadcaster, and today we have news that the BBC iPlayer mobile app is bolstering demand for the service.
According to an article over at TechRadar the BBC iPlayer has seen a strong growth in demand from mobile devices, along with other hardware such as Smart TVs, games consoles, and Blu-ray players this year. When it comes to use on smartphones and tablet PCs demand has grown by a staggering 94 percent from April 2011, and an increase of fifteen percent last month alone.
This compares to games consoles, Smart TVs, and Blu-ray players that saw an increase of eleven percent during April of this year, but was 57 percent up from April of last year. This coincides with the BBC iPlayer app for the iPad being the top free app for the device of all time, which is helping the broadcaster enjoy another bumper year for it’s in house on demand service.
These figures doesn’t include data from Virgin Media as its results were too late to be included in the data, but the BBCs online traffic for its TV and radio programming is becoming massive, and the service is set to be added to Sky Anytime+ later this year. Since the end of last year the BBC iPlayer has been getting more than 160 million requests each month, which breaks down to 120 million TV requests, and about 40 million radio requests.
The most popular TV program for the service during January was Sherlock Series 2 Episode 1, while in February it was the popular Top Gear show. If you have yet to experience the BBC iPlayer while on the go the iOS version can be found on the App Store, while Android users can download it via Google Play.
