Google is expected to announce the next version of the Android operating system soon in the shape of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but in the meantime a vast range of Android hardware continues to wait for the current version to arrive, and we now have news that the Android ICS 4.0 update has been released to the Sony Xperia S.
When Sony originally released their latest flagship smartphone there was some disappointment and raised eyebrows that it arrived with Android 2.3 Gingerbread instead of ICS, but as SlashGear are reporting Sony did promise to update the handset, and true to its word the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade is now started its roll out to the Xperia S.
The software will bring a number of new features to the handset, and Sony has added some of its own enhancements to the operating system. It has improved some of the on board entertainment applications such as Album, Movies and Walkman along with all the usual functionality that Android 4.0 brings with it.
Users can now store any content with the Movies app that they have added or purchased via the handset, and will now bring down album art from the Internet along with any other relevant information such as actors or plot. Album now allows users to share photos via Picasa, Facebook, and other photo sharing services from within the app. There is also similar Facebook integration with the Walkman app with information provided by Gracenote.
The new operating system will also provide Xperia S users with features such as a settings icon draw, Face Unlock, data consumption control, and extra customization options. The software has begun the process of rolling out to handsets via an OTA update, so there is now need for a PC connection, but you will probably want to do it via Wi-Fi as the file size is around 200MB, and the availability will vary from country to country. Below we have embedded a video of the Xperia S with Android 4.0.
