These days with smartphones it seems to be all about the camera, but how well does the Nokia Lumia 920 stand up against the likes of rival giants the iPhone 5, the Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One X and even the Nokia 808 PureView when it comes to low light picture snapping? Well we are about to find out.
The guys over at Engadget paid a visit to the Nokia imaging labs in Tampere, Finland, and given access to a comprehensive testing suite so they could shoot with a Nokia Lumia 920 prototype in a controlled environment along with rival smartphones, and we have a video of the occasion for your viewing consideration below.
The guys snapped a scene with each smartphone with each device set at 5 lux, which is a level on par with what one would expect on a dimly lit street in the middle of the night, and apparently the Nokia Lumia 920 took the crown easily, although the iPhone 5 didn’t do too poorly, and almost matched the Lumia 920.
The Nokia 808 PureView also performed well in low light; however both the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X delivered unusable results.
The Lumia 920 delivered the most even exposure of all devices tested, albeit the shot has a yellow cast but given the low light conditions it is acceptable, whilst the 808 PureView delivered good results but did require longer exposure and lost quite a bit of colour detail, and had a heavy magenta cast.
The iPhone 5 didn’t perform too well snapping images from a dark rooftop at night, but didn’t do too bad in the lab test, but does have a heavy orange cast and is underexposed. The HTC One X image did managed to grab some detail, but was hardly usable along with being noisy and dark, whilst the Samsung Galaxy S3 only just squeezed in by snapping only the brightest elements, but overall didn’t fare that well.
If you wish to check out all the low light galleries in this tests between the rival smartphones you can do so by heading on over the the Engadget website, and of course we have that video footage embedded for your viewing consideration below…enjoy.
