Every now and then at Phones Review we like to bring readers a comparison between two devices, hopefully to help you choose between them or to give an alternative to a phone or tablet that you’re thinking of purchasing. Occasionally it’s interesting to pit a device that may be little known to most people against a really well known and popular device and so today we are looking at the Scroll Evoke Android Jelly Bean tablet vs. the Nexus 7.
The Scroll Evoke comes from a UK brand called Storage Options and is its most powerful tablet so far. It runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and is extremely competitively priced with decent specs and quad-core graphics and offering what Storage Options claims to be a “impressive polished display and rich viewing experience.” It’s significant that it uses the latest Android Jelly Bean operating system from Google as the Nexus 7 tablet made by Asus was launched back in July, also on Jelly Bean, the first device to do so at that time. Many of you will already have heard of the Nexus 7 as it has been a huge hit offering very respectable specs and features at an affordable price so let’s take a look at what each of these tablets have to offer.
Processor
The Scroll Evoke has a 1.6GHz RK3066 dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor with graphics taken care of by a Mali-400 2D/ 3D quad-core GPU. The Nexus 7 on the other hand has a 1.2GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 Cortex A9 quad-core processor and ULP GeForce GPU.
Display
A 7-inch IPS display with resolution of 1024 x 600 features on the Scroll Evoke while the Nexus 7 has a 7-inch LED-backlit IPS LCS display with resolution of 1280 x 800.
RAM and Storage
The Scroll Evoke has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, expandable to 32GB via microSD. Google’s Nexus 7 has 1GB of RAM and 16 or 32GB of internal storage, non-expandable.
Camera
On the Scroll Evoke there’s a 2-megapixel rear camera and 0.3-megapixel front-facing camera while the Nexus 7 has one camera only, a 1.2-megapixel camera with 720p video calling.
Operating System
As stated previously the Scroll Evoke releases with Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean. The Nexus 7 launched running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, now upgradeable to 4.2.1.
Dimensions
The Scroll Evoke measures 125mm x 188mm x 10mm while the Nexus 7 measures 120mm x 198.5mm x 10.5mm.
Price and Availability
The Scroll Evoke is extremely well priced at only £119.99 and you can buy it online at this Storage Options Link. The Nexus 7 tablet at the Google Play Store here is priced at £159 for the 16GB model or £199 for the 32GB version. There’s also a WiFi + mobile data 32GB model at £259.
While we can’t pretend that the Scroll Evoke has the best specs of these two it does come out pretty well especially when taking into account the price difference. With the Scroll Evoke a full £40 cheaper than the cheapest Nexus 7 this is really something to consider and it has plenty to offer the average tablet user while we think it looks pretty good too. The Nexus 7 will still be the chosen tablet of many though, partially because it’s a Nexus device and so will always receive Android OS updates quickly and partly because it has been out for several months already, is tried and tested and has gathered a lot of praise. We’d like readers’ opinions on this.
Would you rather pay the extra for the specs of the Nexus 7 knowing that it has already been a big hit? Maybe you don’t mind trying a lesser-known brand, particularly when the price is so competitive? Let us know by sending us your comments.
