Although we realize that smartphones with large displays have been very much the trend lately, it seems that Samsung is almost obsessed with bringing out devices with ever-increasing screen sizes. Meet the Samsung Galaxy Fonblet 5.8 smartphone that is set to be introduced shortly and will have a 5.8-inch display, even larger than the Galaxy Note 2 with it’s 5.5-inches. At this rate we’re beginning to wonder if Samsung will know when to stop!
Details of the Samsung Galaxy Fonblet 5.8(GT-I9152) have just come to light but are pretty sparse at the moment. However from what we can see so far from insider knowledge, the ‘Fonblet’ will have a 5.8-inch display, will run on Android Jelly Bean, either 4.1.2 or 4.2.1, on launch and will have dual-SIM support. It will be available in pure white and although it uses the same sized display as the Galaxy Player, we are assured the ‘Fonblet’ is indeed a phone rather than a media player.
The Fonblet (where did the term phablet go!) will be released in Europe and introduced soon according to SamMobile. We’re not entirely convinced on the Fonblet name, which we think is pretty naff so wouldn’t be surprised if the name is changed when it’s officially introduced. Samsung’s present penchant for large screens on devices is certainly evident with the Fonblet but we’ve also heard rumors that the upcoming Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 will also have increased display sizes.
Recently we told how the Galaxy S4 could have a 4.99-inch 1080p AMOLED display, up from the 4.8-inches of the Galaxy S3. There have also been murmurings of a mahoosive 6.3-inch display for the Galaxy Note 3. However the current Galaxy Note 3 has a display size of 5.5-inches so a jump to 6.3-inches just seems a bit too far to us, although no doubt there are many people who love their Galaxy Notes so much they might appreciate an even bigger display.
There’s no news yet on exactly when the Samsung Galaxy Fonblet 5.8 will be formally introduced but the wise money would be on it making an appearance at MWC next month in Barcelona. We’ll bring you more news on the Fonblet as we hear it. What are your initial thoughts on the Galaxy Fonblet? Do you think Samsung should start to rein in the display sizes of future smartphones?
