Nexus 5 keyword is camera but no 1080p display

#

The next Google Nexus device is creating a lot of attention even though plenty of us are still excited about the Nexus 4 from LG. Ever since the beginning of this year we’ve been hearing rumblings about a Nexus 5 device, possibly to be made by LG again, and we’ve already heard of leaked specs. However these seem to be changing by the moment and today we have the latest details of believed specs for the Nexus 5 and the keyword seems to be ‘camera.’

Way back in February we told how the camera could be a real focus for the Nexus 5 after Google’s Senior VP of Engineering Vic Gudontra said that the company was “committed to making Nexus phones insanely great cameras.” Now it seems even more likely that the focus of the Nexus 5 (excuse the pun) could well be the camera.

In the leaked specs that we have seen so far for the Nexus 5, firstly a 16-megapixel rear camera was claimed and that was followed by rumors of a Nikon-branded three-sensor camera module for the phone. This was to be no ordinary phone camera though as it was stated that this camera would use stacked low-resolution sensors, which would all be used to come up with one high-resolution image that would be superior in quality.

Now though, a tipster to Phone Arena has supplied them with some new specs for the Nexus 5 and some of these are quite different to those we’ve heard before. The tipster claims that the camera for the Nexus 5 will be a 9-megapixel CCD camera, a very different option than the CMOS sensor currently used in many smartphone cameras. Unfortunately the camera is not detailed much more than that except that the source claims that camera performance will be a major emphasis for the Nexus 5.

Other specs from the same source include a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core processor and a 4.5-inch 720p IPS display. Many may think that the lack of a 1080p display for the Nexus 5 would be a step backwards, especially considering how many upcoming impressive handsets are due out with 1080p full HD displays. However, it’s said that the Nexus 5 isn’t being made to compete with all those large-screened 1080p devices, again with the point being made that the Nexus 5 is all about the camera.

The 4.5-inch display is said to utilize 88% of the phone’s front, more than any other smartphone to date, which would presumably mean the Nexus 5 would have extremely narrow bezels and would also enable a compact form factor. Another plus factor, especially for those of you who are heavy users of their smartphones is that the battery will be 2,800 mAh, a big step up from the 2,100 mAh battery in the current Nexus 4. One element that may disappoint though is that this latest source says that the Nexus 5 will have no expandable storage, the same as for the Nexus 4, and that was one of the only criticisms leveled at the Nexus 4.

As always we’ll remind you that these are not confirmed specs and of course we are likely to hear much more between now and when the next Nexus eventually launches. We’ll be passing on all the news as we hear it. In the meantime what do you think about the possibility of a 9-megapixel CCD camera for the Nexus 5? Maybe you’re more concerned about the lack of expandable storage again or the ‘only’ 720p display? Let us know with your comments.

Though quite happy about the small foot print, could NEVER FORGIVE google if it doesnt provide support for removable storage and also FM radio. Doesnt this mean following the footsteps of apple? Provide the consumers with ALL choices rather than limiting the device function. Hope google listens.

Seriously?, except for the camera this is basically the same as the 4. I really wanted the 1080p display. I hope these specs are wrong.

I have 2 Galaxy Nexus (Nexus 3) for me and my wife, bought July 2012. I sat out the Nexus 4, because the 4.65″ 720p we already had vs 4.7″ 720p (Nexus 4) wasn’t enough of a difference to justify spending another $800 (2 x $350 + tax + shipping + accessories) just a few months later.

So, waiting for the Nexus 5. Or I was. 🙁 It better have AT LEAST a 5″ 1080p screen or I’ll go looking for something that does.

The whole appeal of the Nexus is it’s comparable to the best phones out there at the time it’s released, for about half the price. The Nexus 3 specs were as good as the Samsung Galaxy SII and iPhone 4S (other phones during the same year of release). The Nexus 4 specs were as competitive with the Galaxy SIII and the iPhone 5 (other phones during the same year of release) . Now look at the Samsung Galaxy S4 specs and tell me this alleged Nexus 5 with puny 4.5″ 720p display would be worth bragging about? NO. That’s LESS screen than I have now with the Nexus 3.

Google better not mess this up.

CCD camera was already implemented on previous SHARP smartphones such as IS03, 007SH and SH-03C, so it won’t be surprised.

  5. I’m still using a Sony Ericsson K800i (had it since release if that tells you something) looking for my next phone , I found an iphone lately and just sold it cause it didn’t impress, for me it has to look nice, be well priced with nice features, 1080p I really don’t care about on such a small screen so 720p is FINE, but the Camera and specs HAVE to be good and if the Camera is going to be sooooo good you NEED extra storage. Unless you plan to constantly be bumping them off to the computer which NEEDING to do that constantly is 100% impractical which BEING practical is why you bought a smart phone in the first place. Removal Battery is also a must, I refuse to buy anything like apple provides.

it’s so surprising how many people don’t know that it’s pretty impossible to see more than 300 ppi (pixels per inch). The Nexus 4 has 330 ppi, crazy phones like the Galaxy S4 have 440 ppi. The difference is IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE !!!

So, I’m saying it again. More than 300 (maybe 350 for all of you eagle eyed specalist posters beneath me) ppi are a WASTE OF MONEY.

I can say it in a different way, too, it’s easy to understand, listen: on most phones, 1080p is a WASTE of money, because the pixels are IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE even at 720p.

if you’re interested, google on how to calculate the ppi – it depends on the size of the display, for example 4 inch, 5 inch, and so on, and on the resolution, for example stupid 1920×1080 😉

Above 350 ppi, the human eye cannot distinguish pixels from each other, even if you hold your phone directly onto your eye, so close that you almost can’t focus anymore and this would look stupid anyway. So, until the manufacturing process makes no difference in cost between making a 1080p and a 720p display (this will take another 1 or 2 phone generations), anything above ~300 ppi is a waste of money!

Instead of a stupid 440 ppi display (1080p @ 5 inch), which makes no sense, because you CANNOT SEE ANY DIFFERENCE to 300 ppi, the money should be invested in a stronger CPU, more memory, go into quality control / quality assurance or simply make a lower retail price.

The thing to remember is that resolutions and screen sizes on their own are worthless numbers. Combined they result in the ppi (pixels per inch) and PLEASE UNDERSTAND THIS: anything above 300-350 ppi is the same to the human eye and a WASTE OF MONEY !!!!
