There’s plenty of excitement in the smartphone world at the moment with the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 being revealed a few hours ago. However, there’s also good news for those who own the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4, as the Android 4.3 Jelly Bean update is heading to those phones next month.
Android 4.3 is already available for the Google Play Edition of the Samsung Galaxy S4 but has not come to the standard versions yet. Last month we also told how the Galaxy S3 seemed likely to skip the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean update and skip to Android 4.3 instead, and this has turned out to be the case.
Although the Samsung Unpacked event today was primarily concerned with the new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Gear smartwatch, a further piece of info from Samsung revealed that the Android 4.3 update will roll out to the Galaxy S3 and S4 in October.
This will be welcome news to the millions of owners of those devices looking forward to the latest version of Jelly Bean, although to some extent we’re now looking ahead to Android 4.4 KitKat that was announced yesterday.
Android 4.3 Jelly Bean will also bring Galaxy Gear functionality to the Galaxy S4. We can only hope that the problems that plagued the Nexus 4 with the Android 4.3 update, don’t also affect the Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4.
A precise date for the update was not provided by Samsung but usually we see unlocked versions of the devices receiving the update first with carrier versions following later. It is also the case that some carriers take longer to clear the updates before they release them, so times can vary considerably.
