The iPhone 6 release may be months away but there have already been a significant amount of leaks and rumors about this year’s premium iPhone. Yesterday we heard a leak suggesting that Apple will be moving away from Samsung for the chips used in the iPhone 6. At the same time it was reported that TMSC had already started production of the A8 chipset that will be used. Now a new report regarding iPhone 6 orders implies that it could be a real record breaker.

We were a little skeptical about the rumor that the chipset for the iPhone 6 had already gone into production, as there is still a long wait until the expected fall release. However, there has also been a lot of conjecture that the iPhone 6 would revert back to a summer release and the latest news seems to reinforce that possibility.

A report out of Taiwan cites Chinese-language Commercial Times data from Citigroup Global Markets. It’s stated that Apple is expected to place orders with Foxconn for 90 million iPhone 6 units. Analyst Wei Chen refers to a 13% growth in 2013 Apple phone shipments, and these new figures would indicate a rise of 23% for 2014, so an exceptionally larger growth is anticipated.

This could perhaps tie in with an earlier than expected release, as also possibly indicated by recent leaked panels purporting to be from the device. The global rate of shipments for smartphones is expected to go down this year to only 28% from 40% last year though, so it seems that Apple is pushing the boat out for the iPhone 6 and is anticipating big things for the device.

We can only hope that these reported order figures mean that the iPhone 6 will be a significant upgrade over the current iPhone 5S, hence Apple’s apparent belief in possible sales. Do you think Apple is planning something groundbreaking for the iPhone 6?
