Rumors are ramping up about the Apple iPhone 6 and we are hearing an increasing amount of leaks. It has been rumored on and off that the next iPhone will feature a sapphire glass display, and now there are reports that the iPhone 6 could feature a Quad HD 5.5-inch display.
Although there has been previous speculation that there will be two models of iPhone 6, one with a 4.7-inch display and also a larger option, it has been thought that the smaller version (still larger than the iPhone 5S) would come first with the larger variant at some point later. Now Japan Display, a Japanese-based supplier of displays for Apple, has announced a 5.5-inch display with QHD resolution that it says will be used for “leading-edge smartphones.”
This display has resolution of 2560 x 1440 and 538 ppi and the company expects to begin shipping it in April. Tying in nicely with this is another report on Friday stating that Japan Display would be supplying Apple with displays for the next iPhone. Although the report mentioned both 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays, it didn’t specify which one Japan Display would be supplying. This same report also said that mass production of the display being used might start in the April quarter and that the display resolution would be much higher than that used in the iPhone 5S.
As well as this, NPD DisplaySearch senior vice president Paul Semenza says that Japan Display’s 5-5-inch QHD display is a prospect for the iPhone 6, though does have a couple of reservations about this. One of these is the possibility of a 4.7-inch display with resolution of 1600 x 900 being used, and the other is a certain amount of surprise that the Japanese company as already announced its new QHD display.
It does seem at least plausible that the iPhone 6 could have one of the new 5.5-inch Quad HD displays developed by Japan Display, but at this stage it’s just too early to tell given Apple’s infamous secrecy surrounding upcoming products. While we wait you might want to take a look at a new concept design of the iPhone 6. Would you like to see Apple step up to a QHD display for the iPhone 6?
