We see many top-end smartphones being released but there are also plenty of very decent mid-range devices on offer. Two of those are the HTC Desire 816 that released in March and the Sony Xperia T3, which is just arriving for sale in countries such as the UK, India and US. Today we’re looking at the HTC Desire 816 vs. Sony Xperia T3 in a specs rundown.
These are both aimed at the middle of the market, and as such pricing will be in a similar bracket, although will vary by retailer and region. They are also both Android smartphones. Processors
The HTC Desire 816 is powered by a 1.6GHz Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor and has Adreno 305 graphics. The Xperia T3 has a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 400 quad-core CPU and Adreno 305 GPU.
Display
The Desire 816 has a 5.5-inch Super LCD2 display with resolution of 1280 x 720 resulting in 267 ppi. The Xperia T3 has a 5.3-inch IPS LCD display with 1280 x 720 resolution and 277 ppi.
RAM and Storage
There’s 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage that’s expandable via microSD to 128GB for the Desire 816. The Xperia T3 has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, expandable to 32GB.
Camera set-up
The Desire 816 has a 13-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash and video capture at 1080p@30fps or 720p@60fps. It also has a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. The Xperia T3 has an 8-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, and video capture at 1080p@30fps, as well as a 1.1-megapixel front-facing snapper.
Battery
The Desire 816 has a 2600 mAh battery while the Xperia T3 has a 2500 mAh battery. Both are non-removable.
Connectivity
Both phones support 4G LTE, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, GPRS, EDGE and microUSB 2.0. The Desire 816 has Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n while the Xperia T3 has Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n and Wi-Fi Direct.
Operating System
Both handsets run Android 4.4.2 KitKat but the Desire 816 is skinned with HTC Sense UI v6 while the Xperia T3 uses the BRAVIA engine 2.
Dimensions and Weight
The Desire 816 measures 156.6mm x 78.7mm x 7.9mm and weighs 165g. The Xperia T3 measures 150.7mm x 77mm x 7mm and weighs 148g.
From looking at the above specs we can see that the Desire 816 definitely has more to offer. For example the Desire 816 has a faster processor, a larger display, more RAM, a higher level of expandable storage, better camera capabilities and a higher battery capacity. It also comes in a dual SIM option.
The Xperia T3 is slightly lighter and slimmer and has a display with slightly more ppi, but this may not be enough for many potential buyers when considering the benefits of the Desire 816 in comparison. Of course we haven’t taken into account the designs of these phones and that may also be a deciding factor for some.
