There have been a lot of reports, and most of the conflicting, regarding a special upcoming phone from HTC, dubbed “Eye”, or “One M8” eye. All reports seem to agree that — and because of the codename — some special camera features will be available on the yet unannounced phone, but there are basically two sets of reports: one that claims this will be a “selfie” centric phone (and we’ve seen a lot of those recently), and the other which insinuates that HTC will be further improving the camera setup on the back (the main camera). The rumor we’re looking at today (with a twist of leak added) is part of the second category.
While there’s no way in verifying the veracity of the tweet, which is at the source of today’s report, we advise you to treat it with the usual dose of skepticism. Now, about the rumor: the M8 Eye is allegedly an HTC One M8 with a 13 megapixel DuoCamera setup. HTC has, with the One M7 and One M8, kept the main camera resolution at four megapixels, making the pixels larger (for better low light sensitivity), and calling them UltraPixels. With the M8 however, while keeping the same resolution for the sensor, HTC has added a secondary camera; the two form the DuoCamera setup, and, together with supporting software, allow users to take special 3D pictures, and apply various effects.
If today’s report turns out to be true, HTC will be moving away from the “UltraPixels”. The HTC Butterfly 2, a One M8 variant for Asia and Pacific markets, already features a DuoCamera setup with a 13 megapixel main shooter on the back. Releasing a similar model worldwide would make sense. Today’s report claims that the One M8 Eye will be landing next month (which is just a couple of day away), and will come with Android 4.4.4 on-board, on top of which HTC will preload its own Sense user interface, in its version 6.
There are no other details, at the moment, concerning the One M8 Eye (like pricing, availability, markets, or additional specs), but, with the One M8 and One M8 for Windows Phone out, we can expect a similar build and overall aspect (if HTC decides to keep this Eye phone in the M8 family).
