Apple’s largest offering, the iPhone 6 Plus, is indeed, a large phone, probably too large for the regular iPhone user, who constantly forgets it in its pocket. Regardless of who’s to blame, Apple, or the user, there’s a new scandal going on. We’re sure you’ve heard all about #bendgate, where some iPhone devices went in pockets in their regular shape, and came out bent. Not by themselves, of course, but by applying an external force. Consumer Reports has also weighed in on the matter, but Samsung, Apple’s main competitor, is also facing some issues with what the internet has called #gapgate (some Samsung Galaxy Note 4 units have gaps, suffering from poor construction or assembly).
The South Korean phone manufacturer is continuing to poke Apple — as it has historically done in the past with its ads — but this time it is not specifically calling out Apple, and the #bendgate (though it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what the purpose of the video is). Anyways, in the short clip (which you can see embedded below, for your viewing pleasure), Samsung has recorded a set of tests that they are allegedly conducting on the Galaxy Note 4. These tests emulate real life scenarios and “tortures” to which a smartphone can be put through in day to day use.
We’re seeing three-point bend tests, as well as a test which emulates a human body sitting on it, repeatedly, with 100kg of force. Needless to say that, in all cases, the Galaxy Note 4 in the video bounced back and regained its original shape. Samsung goes ahead and “reveals” the secret behind the “big, thin, light, and strong” Note 4. It is, according to the video clip, a combination between materials uses (metal — Samsung doesn’t call it aluminum — frame and magnesium bracket), in addition to “mutually reinforcing structure between parts”, whatever that might mean.
Manufacturers are striving to release thinner and thinner devices, while continuing the trend of bigger, and lighter. This often has some unwanted results, but, in every case, it comes down to the user, and the way he or she utilizes the gadget, to take care of these rather expensive tools improving our life, every day.
