LG introduces its own chip, powers the new LG G3 Screen
LG has been working on its own processor for quite some time now, and is finally joining the ranks of competitors like Apple or Samsung, who are either designing or building their own application processors (actually, Samsung is building the processors inside Apple’s products, but Apple is the one behind the design). We’ve heard reports of LG’s plans starting back in the summer, and now, the South Korean phone manufacturer (among others) has finally introduced its first mobile application processor, called the “NUCLUN”.
For those of you who enjoy technical details, the NUCLUN octa-core processor is built on ARM’s Big.Little architecture and is comprised of four cores running at 1.5GHz (ARM Cortex-A15) which are in charge of high performance operation, and four extra cores clocking at 1.2GHz (ARM Cortex-A7) for less intensive processing. “The number of performing cores can be adjusted based on the requirements of the task for maximum processing power or maximum energy savings”, says the official press release, found in the source link below. As far as network operation is concerned, 4G networks, and LTE-A Cat.6, are featured, “for maximum download speeds of up to 225Mbps while retaining backward compatibility with current LTE networks”.
The brand new application processor is set to debut on one of LG’s most recent devices, this week, also announced with the same occasion: the LG G3 Screen. Look at it as another G3 variant, as even the press release states that the G3 Screen “inherits the design language, camera and UX features of the popular LG G3”. We’re looking at a phone that packs the new NUCLUN Octa-Core SoC (1.5GHz Quad-Core +1.2GHz Quad-Core), a 5.9-inch Full HD IPS screen, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (expandable), 13MP camera with optical image stabilization paired with a 2MP front-facer, a 3,000mAh battery, and Android 4.4 KitKat. It will be available in black and white, but details concerning pricing and exact availability — beyond “this week” — is yet unknown.
“NUCLUN opens up a new chapter in LG’s history of innovation in the mobile industry. With this in-house solution, we will be able to achieve better vertical integration and further diversity our product strategy against stronger competition. NUCLUN will give us greater flexibility in our mobile strategy going forward,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company
