The new Samsung Galaxy Core Prime has just arrived on the scene and is an affordably priced smartphone. One of its rivals will be another Samsung phone in the form of the Galaxy Core 2, which released back in the summer. We’re comparing the specs and price of the Samsung Galaxy Core Prime vs. Galaxy Core 2 in this India showdown.
These phones have plenty of similarities but also some differences. They are both Android phones for the more budget end of the market and both are dual SIM handsets. Let’s contrast the key specs of each to see how they stand up against each other and what they have to offer potential buyers.
Processors
The Galaxy Core Prime has a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 401 quad-core processor and Adreno 306 graphics. The Galaxy Core 2 (Core II) also has a 1.2GHz quad-core processor but the chip and GPU are unspecified.
Display
There’s nothing between them here as they both have 4.5-inch displays with resolution of 800 x 480 resulting in 207 ppi.
RAM and Storage
The Galaxy Core Prime has 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD to 64GB. The Galaxy Core 2 has 768MB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage, also expandable to 64GB.
Camera set-up
Both phones have 5-megapixel rear cameras with autofocus and LED flash. However, the Galaxy Core Prime has 1080p video capture while the Core 2 has 480p video capture. The Core Prime has a 2-megapixel front-facing camera while the Core 2 only has a VGA front-facing unit.
Battery
Both phones have a removable 2000 mAh battery, so again there’s nothing to split them here.
Connectivity
Both support 3G, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n with WiFi hotspot and WiFi Direct, Bluetooth 4.0, GPRS, EDGE, GPS and microUSB 2.0.
Operating System
The new Galaxy Core Prime (pictured above) runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat while the Galaxy Core 2 (pictured below) runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat.
Dimensions and Weight
The Galaxy Core Prime measures 130.8mm x 67.9mm x 8.8mm and weighs 130g. The Galaxy Core 2 measures 130.3mm x 68mm x 9.8mm and weighs 138g.
Price
The Samsung Galaxy Core Prime has still not been officially launched for India, but it’s already for sale at some retailers from around Rs. 9,300. The Samsung Galaxy Core 2 launched at around Rs. 11,900 but has dropped in price and can now be found for around Rs. 7,900 depending on retailer.
As shown by the above specs these two smartphones have plenty in common, but the newer phone definitely has the better specs of the two. For example the Galaxy Core Prime has more RAM and internal storage, better video recording capability and front-facing camera, and runs a slightly later version of Android.
There’s not too much in it as far as size is concerned and as both are Samsung handsets build quality will be comparable. However, the older Galaxy Core 2 is a little cheaper, so for some this could make a difference. Ultimately if you can afford a little more we’d recommend the Galaxy Core Prime as your best bet.
