It’s been a tough road for the OUYA, an Android console many of us wanted to see succeed. Rumors of the company’s acquisition by Razer have come to a head today, as it’s been confirmed that they are now the new owners of Ouya.
A few days ago, rumors arose that Ouya may be up for sale and that Razer was interested. Those rumors were confirmed today amid the madness known as E3, and confirmation of the Ouya sale comes from an unlikely source. They takeover wasn’t announced at the big show, instead it came to light through Mesa Global, an investment bank said to be involved in the transaction.
Mesa had the news posted on their website earlier today under “transactions” where it was posted that they were the exclusive financial advisor to Ouya “during its sale to Razer.” That’s about as clear as it gets, and while the news has since been removed, the sale along with the buyer shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.
Razer knows gaming, and they’ve already dipped their hands into the world of Android with the Razer Forge. Ouya has basically been in Limbo for some time becoming an afterthought in the minds of most gamers since Android TV kicked off. The countless missteps by Ouya since its Kickstarter days undoubtedly hastened its demise, and it will be interesting to see what Razer plans on doing with the company and its catalog.
The Razer acquisition hasn’t been officially announced, but we expect that to change very soon if the listing from Mesa Global is as legit as it looked. With E3 underway, we could get a big announcement at the expo this week or the news could break with a simple press release at any time.
Are you glad to see Razer acquire Ouya or do you prefer your mobile gaming on a smaller screen?
