Photography enthusiasts, it is time to rejoice. Apple had earlier announced that their latest iPhones would support capturing pictures in DNG format. But this feature is not supported in Apple Camera but third party apps will have support for this. This is possible with the release of an API from Apple. Adobe Lightroom for iOS is definitely one of the first apps to flaunt RAW support. Here are all the features of Adobe Lightroom along with a small tutorial on how you can capture photos in DNG format.
Adobe Lightroom for iOS, however, supports RAW image capture only for phones with the 12MP iSight camera. This means that users of the iPhone 6, 6 Plus and 5S will not have this feature. Users of the iPhone 6S, 6S Plus, SE, 7 and 7 Plus will be able to make use of it.
Users of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will be able to make use of the app more than the others due to the upgraded camera. Adobe Lightroom for iOS supports P3 ‘wide color’ found in the iPhone 7. This adds 25% more hues compared to the iPhone 6S.
You should note that capturing pictures in DNG format is not for everyone. Since there is no loss of quality due to the absence of compression, it requires more storage. Also, the pictures require a lot of post-processing.
Adobe Lightroom for iOS is targeted at photography enthusiasts who want to get more out of the images. Check out the image below which compares a JPEG file with a DNG file. The app can be used to bring back a lot of details that would otherwise be lost in the JPEG file.
Adobe Lightroom for iOS is currently available free on iTunes. You can download it from the link given below. But make sure you have the 12MP iSight camera and a bit of knowledge in RAW photography before getting the app.
