In the West, Coolpad isn’t a well-known brand. That said, devices like the Coolpad Cool Changer S1 are going to bring the company some attention as it has just been announced with specifications worthy of a flagship smartphone.
Towards the end of last month, Coolpad dropped the Note 3S which had 3GB of RAM and solid specifications. The Coolpad Changer S1 is a bit beefier under the hood, but still keeps things affordable. In regards to its design, the handset carries a familiar look that doesn’t break any new ground. That said, it has a 7.5mm thin metal shell with chrome accents around the sides which help to give it a bit of class.
Coolpad wasn’t quite ready to make the leap to QHD with the Coolpad Cool Changer S1, so you’ll get an FHD panel measuring 5.5-inches. Beneath that glass resides a Snapdragon 821 coupled with your choice of 4GB or 6GB of RAM. The 4GB model comes with 64GB of storage while the 6GB variants offer up either 64GB or 128GB of storage space. On the audio side, we’ve got a sound setup from Harman Kardon and a free set of Harman AKG headphones.
When it comes to cameras, the Coolpad Changer S1 is just as solid with an 8MP front-facing snapper to take care of your selfies. The front-facing camera is larger at 16MP and is listed as the Sony IMX298 which has PDAF to go along with a Dual-LED flash. It can also handle 4K video which is a definite plus these days. Other features to note include Quick Charging, a fingerprint scanner, 4G LTE, Dual SIM slots, and a large 4,070mAh battery. The handset will run EUI 5.8 which is based on Android 6.0.
The Coolpad Cool Changer S1 has almost everything you could ask for from a smartphone aside from a QHD panel, which will only be an issue for some. The price won’t be a problem for anyone however with the base 4GB/64GB variation rolling in at around $360 bucks. The 6GB model with 64GB of RAM is $388 while the beastly 128GB Changer S1 is listed at $459. All three will be available in China, but could wind up in other locales.
