Oppo is one of the few Chinese companies that is recognized among western markets. They offer mostly budget smartphones that offer incredible value for the buck. And with the competition becoming more aggressive, it’s natural for them to react to it. The Oppo R17 is one of those answers – let’s see what it’s capable of.
Design
Starting with the design, the Oppo R17 is quite gorgeous to look at. It comes in two different two-tone colors: blue and pink, and both look amazing. You will find both glass on the back and the front, and Oppo proudly says that this is the first smartphone to feature Gorilla Glass 6. On the front, you will find the 6.4” display with 1080 x 2280 resolution. There is also a notch, and it’s the one that looks like a raindrop. As on the Oppo F9, it only fits the front camera and it doesn’t disrupt the display much. The bezels are quite small, with the bottom chin being the most noticeable. Rotating to the back, you will find the camera setup in the middle part of the top. Unfortunately, there is no fingerprint scanner – you’ll have to settle with the Face Unlock feature.
Features
For performance, the Oppo R17 comes with quite powerful internals. Starting with the chipset, the device is equipped with the Snapdragon 670 processor. This chipset was just released at the beginning of this year, and it has a lot of improvements over the 660. Accompanied by the Adreno 615 GPU, both should handle most tasks without any problems. Furthermore, the device comes equipped with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Both should be more than enough to satisfy even the most notorious multitaskers and media users. Rounding up the internals, the 3500mAh battery should easily last you through a full day of heavy use. The company’s own VOOC charging standard is available, giving you two hours of talk time in five minutes.
Moving over to the cameras, the Oppo R17 features a dual combo on the back and a single shooter on the front. For the back, you have a primary 16MP camera with f/1.8 aperture and a secondary 5MP shooter as a depth sensor. Images should be great, with excellent color accuracy and good dynamic range. On the front side, the 25MP shooter is one of the best for all of you selfie lovers. Oppo is doing magic for quite some time with their excellent front cameras, and the R17 is no exception to that. As for video, the device can shoot up to 2160p@30fps.
Finishing with the software, the device ships with Android Oreo 8.1, with the company’s ColorOS 5.2 skin on top of it. It’s packing a lot of useful features, and it doesn’t require a lot of learning for use.
Pricing and availability
The Oppo R17 is available for purchase through Oppo’s website in many different markets. The device is starting at ~$523.
