Mobile Number Portability Coming Thursday in India

For those that don’t know, Mobile Number Portability is where a customer can opt to change their mobile phone operator and keep hold of their handset phone number, and India has been waiting the arrival of Mobile Number Portability for quite some time.

However according to an article over on Sify, the roll out of Mobile Number Portability will commence on Thursday in the Rohtak district of Haryana and will apparently be slowly extended to other areas according to a statement from the Department of Telecom.

Initially MNP was due to be rolled out by the 31st of December 2009 but was then delayed and a deadline was put in place for a 31st of March 2010 roll out which was again delayed until the 30 of June 2010. Then MNP was again delayed due to mobile operators not being ready with their infrastructure to support the service.

However finally India will see the roll out of Mobile Number Portability come Thursday and customers will be required to SMS 1900 and will then receive a special porting code, which is to be entered on an application form of their new service provider and the mobile number transfer will be completed within 4 days.
