So think about all that free energy out in the big wide world given off by the sun, solar energy. There are some smartphones that utilise solar power, but how about a hack that can virtually get any phone to soak up some of that solar energy to power the handset?

Well what we have for you below is a video guide on how to hack your smartphone to take advantage of solar energy, and the video guide comes our way courtesy of the guys over at Daily Mobile and by way of YouTube user Paulie1982.

The footage doesn’t feature any commentary so you’ll need to watch the video closely if you wish to attempt to convert your mobile phone to take advantage for solar power, which uses a stripped down garden solar light.

You’ll need to remove the solar panel from the garden light and knife a matching hole into the back casing of your handset and then follow the video onscreen directions. I’m not too sure if this is really the way to go to gain solar power on your device as it requires some mutilation of your device, so we wouldn’t recommend it, but if anyone has an old device kicking around and would like to give it a go, feel free to let us know how it goes and if it works.
