iPhone 4 vs Nokia N9: Inspirational N9 needs Windows Phone 7 OS

For the Nokia N9 smartphone to walk up to the Apple iPhone 4, and commence the battle of the best is something worth thinking about. Shall we see what happens when you pit the two together, this comparison is not too far fetched, both the handsets have their own unique features, but what one is favoured more.

The Nokia N9 is slightly bigger at 116.5 x 61.2 x 12.1mm, whereas the iPhone 4 is 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm, and the iPhone 4 does weigh a little more at 137 grams against the N9 being 135 grams.

The comparison was done by “Know Your Mobile”, and it is a very good read. We will break it down in short terms, long comparisons are boring, and we are not boring (Well we try not to be). When it comes to the design of the iPhone 4 and the Nokia N9, we personally love the look of the iPhone 4 but then that is our opinion. We said we like the look of the iPhone 4 but that does not mean it is better, we do not like the glass front and back, the rounded edges and aluminium band around the iPhone 4 does look great and feels great also.

The N9 on the other hand comes in many colours and is a lovely shape with curved glass screen, the shape of the N9 shows of all the angles on the Nokia N9.

The contrasting shapes are pretty neat in our view, and we really like how the lines of the screen follow the contours of the bodywork and extend right out to the edges of the handset. The screen basically looks better on the N9, got to admit even though we use the iPhone 4 the N9 is the winner on design.

iPhone 0 — Nokia 1

When it comes to the display the iPhone 4 has a 3.5-inch LED-backlit IPS TFT capacitive touchscreen, with resolution 640×960 and 326ppi. The Nokia N9 features a 3.9-inch Amoled capacitive touchscreen, with 480 x 854 pixels and 238ppi. The Nokia N9 comes with Gorilla Glass, anti-glare polariser, accelerometer and multi-touch input, the iPhone 4 comes with scratch-resistant oleophobic surface to repel fingerprints, accelerometer and gyro sensors. Overall the iPhone has a better resolution and pixel density, so the iPhone 4 wins this one.

iPhone 1 — Nokia 1

When it comes to the storage comparison we might as well just say the Nokia N9 is the winner here, no need to beat around the bush with this one. The N9 comes with 16GB or 64GB and they both have 1GB of RAM as well as 512MB ROM. Ok the iPhone 4 comes with the lower 16GB storage version as well but then it only goes up to 32GB, this means the top end iPhone 4 at 32GB is still 32GB smaller than the N9’s 64GB. The iPhone 4 comes with 512MB of RAM, none of the phones card support, and the Nokia has twice the RAM so as said above the Nokia N9 wins this one.

iPhone 1 — Nokia 2

When it comes to the processor it has to be said that both phones draw in this category, both runs a single core 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, the N9 uses the TI OMAP 3630 chipset as well as two further processing units and it has the PowerVR SGX530 graphics processing unit and 430 MHz TI TMS320C64x digital signal processor. The Apple iPhone 4 runs the A4 chipset paired with yet another PowerVR GPU, the iPhone has a better GPU but not much in it. It is a draw and that is that.

iPhone 1 — Nokia 2

Know your mobile, suggests that the iPhone wins the operating system category. The iPhone as an easy-to-use interface and apps, these are very easy to use as soon as you pick up the iPhone. Safari is very fast indeed thanks to the new Nitro JavaScript engine.

The iPhone comes with Airplay and iTunes Home Sharing functions, seeing as there are over 350,000 apps in Apple’s App Store you will never get bored. The Nokia N9 runs on the open-source MeeGo 1.2 ‘Harmattan’ build, personally we like the idea of open-source. This operating system comes with three purpose-built home screens on Harmattan accessible via these finger swipe gestures, without going to much into it the iOS system is well established and MeeGo needs a little more time to settle, would be good to see a Nokia N9 with Windows Phone 7 OS, sounds good hey.

iPhone 2 — Nokia 2

The iPhone 4 has a 5-megapixel primary camera (2592 x 1944 pixels), and video capture at 720p with a camera on the front for video calls etc. The camera on the rear comes with LED flash, geo-tagging and touch focus. The Nokia comes with a better 8-megapixel camera by Carl Zeiss at 3264×2448 pixels, it also comes with a front-facing camera. The Nokia N9 features dual LED flash, autofocus, touch-focus, exposure control, geo-tagging, white balance and face detection. Do not need to be a rocket scientist here do we, the NOKIA N9 wins this category.

iPhone 2 — Nokia 3

Looks like the Nokia N9 is the winner here, the iPhoen comes with a better screen, the Nokia N9 has a better camera set-up, the N9 has larger storage, the iOS is much better, MeeGo should be changed to WP7 OS, please let us know what you think. If we look at the specs and features above on paper the clear winner is the Nokia N9, what do you think?

storage thing says “so as said above the Nokia N9 wins this one.”, but points go for 1 -1 and before that it was 0- 1 for Nokia. Should it be 0 – 2 then?

I don’t think there is problem for Nokia N9 staying with Meego. We, as consumers, tend to believe the bigger app store, the better usage for a smartphone, but this idea only appears when we don’t have a smartphone on hand. The best smartphone should be easy to customise, having simple interface so we can get a job done without any problem, and a long battery for at least 48 hours. I see Iphone and Android phones are not on the right track at this stage.

The Buzz around N9 just shows that this still is battle of devices. You really need just a handful of apps and if they are made properly 500 000 000 000 000 000 million “fart sound” apps doesnt count much.

i personally think meego it much better than windows phone and think that it’s good as is, will definitely be snagging one of these when they come out =D

  5. Replacing MeeGo with Windows Phone 7 is like launching a new phone..
And you are saying that iOS, which still suck at multitasking, is better than MeeGo? I mean what exactly was the comparison based on?
