iOS 5 download time countdown, what to do: Update

The iOS download time is near and we are counting down, this is the biggest Apple software countdown to date and millions will be sitting right there next to their laptops / desktops etc hitting the update button within iTunes.

No one know what the exact time the iOS 5 update will go live tomorrow (Oct 12), but we are suggesting 10am in US (Pacific Time) and 6pm (GMT London Time).

This post on iPhone Rumors makes some suggestions on what you should do before updating your iPhone, and as we’re very close to the iPhone iOS 5 download time, how about a little refresh for our beloved readers on what to do before installing this new Apple software onto your iDevice.

Here come the tips:

1. Make sure you have an Apple iPhone etc (Only joking as that’s obvious).
2. On a serious note now — Visit Apples website and check to see if your iPhone is compatible with the new iOS 5, the reason we mention this is all down to the fact that older models such as the iPhone 3G and before will not be able to install.
3. Make sure you have the latest iTunes; tomorrow will see iTunes getting its 10.5 update.
4. Make sure you back up your Apple device before installing iOS 5.
5. Update all you applications, probably best to have all the updated apps as well as many of them will support iOS 5.
6. If you are into jailbreaking, you may want to revert back their software before updating, this is your choice though.
7. Once again BACKUP your iOS device before installing iOS 5, just in case something goes wrong.

We will let you know when the new iOS 5 goes live, personally we would wait until Thursday 13th because tomorrow everyone will be smashing the servers to bits to get the new iOS 5, it will be the case of MILLIONS hitting that update button all at once.

    go on itunes you can download itunes 10.5 now,,,, if your tempted to download ios 5 gm restore  from one of the torrent sites you can but i think you should wait because there is a couple of things which need updating even though it says the current ios 5 is current and will check again on the 18th october,,i no because ive done it and it works fine but i am still gonna back up my phone and download the offical ipsw

Go to Help then to Check for Updates iTunes will then check for 10.5 and will report back with the findings of the Update so then let it update and there you are now ready for iOS 5 tomorrow at whatever itis out.     I’m a registered Apple developer and I have the iOS 5 Gold Master update and let me tell you that it’s worth the wait. iOS 5 is so advanced you’ll forget your using a phone I am head over heels in love with iOS5 not just notification center but edited and cropping pictures. As well as using the volume button to capture photos I think iOS 5 is by far the most advanced mobile operation system in any phone out now. My 4S comes on friday hopefully and I cannot wait to use Siri.

    It does say in the article it’ll be available in the UK at 18:00 on 12-10-2011 which is about 17 hours from now. You guys have a long, long wait if your sitting there constantly pressing ‘check for update’ in iTunes! Apple has always released updates at around18:00 on the day of release.

    Yes! Just got IOS 5! Not Just Itunes 10.5. Put the device in dfu mode and open itunes as an administrator and click restore. Also change the time on the clock to 18:05 12/10/2011….GOOD LUCK

    For those having problems, Change Location in windows control panel to US and make sure you are not updating jailbroken device. if it does not work change date to 13/10/2011

    So for those who are wondering iOS isn’t actually released yet..So stop saying you’ve downloaded it or by changing your settings to US you’ve downloaded it. The only possible iOS you can download right at this point in time in the developers version of iOS 5. Apple have released Itunes 10.5 but not iOS 5

        hmm… so i changed the date and time on my computer and my phone… opened itunes (which is 10.5) put my phone in DFU mode and then clicked restore… my phone is still on 4,2,10. Do i need to set it up as a new phone or am I missing something?

            Sometimes I do use a 2nd one as a reader, or reference to something like iOS based project management software like inShort or iThoughts when I’m mind mapping.

    I love apple as much as anyone here and I am excited about updating my iPhone, but all this is quite silly.  Seems to me that so many people believe rumors about something quite easily and then moan about it when they get burnt.  Recent example was the iPhone 4S release.  Apple never invented and ‘iPhone 5’ and neither did they say they had.  Just a whole lot of bored people with blogs with too much time on their hands claimed that they were going to.  All you guys sound awfully sad and pathetic.  Get some sleep and a life and just get the update next time you sync your iPhone or iPod…

    i bought iPhone 3GS one week before the release of iPhone 4 (thanks to Apple’s secretive policies). So within a week’s time, my iPhone was already outdated and now with iPhone 4S my phone would be a strong contender in being a valuable artifact in the Louvre museum in Paris. Then i bought an iPad and within a month and a half, it became an outrageously outdated product. Now iOS5 is my only hope to revive these prehistoric devices. I just can’t wait. Getting hysterical with the waiting !!!

      It will remove the jailbroken firmware, pirated apps, and any mods you may have, but yes, you can update a jailbroken device. I prefer to jailbreak, myself, and I highly recommend backing up and restoring prior to update though.  It will ensure a smooth update for you.

      if you backup, nothing will be deleted. it will start up the same as where you left off, even if you dont backup, backup is just a precaution really 🙂

          If you don’t have a complete backup, when it goes to restore, things could get messed up.You should be able to re-download your iTunes, iBooks, and Appstore stuff. Depending on if you sync’d your contacts/calendar/email – you could lose chunks of that… I’d leave the thing connected and go without until you get back from work if you’re mid-install

    It probably depends on the capacity of your device and how full it was. I’ve got a 16 Gb iPhone 4 that was almost completely full. It still hasn’t fully completed (although it’s close). Been going close to 1/2 hour since the DL completed – it’s loading 664 pictures now…

      You use the regular Message app. If the contact you’re writing to has an iOS 5 enabled device, it will automatically iMessage. The dialog bubbles will be cloud blue instead of green.

        Thanks for your quick reply. I tried the same. I even restarted my Macbook Pro but it still didn’t work. Then I hard reset my phone. Erase all files and settings and then tried 4-5 times and voila, it is working at the moment. fingers crossed.

    Got to ‘3 minutes left’, after it downloaded pretty quickly, on the download and then it just timed out and had to be started again…. it’s now saying 5 hours fecking hell

    For anyone experiencing problems updating:

    Make sure you plug your USB into a 2.0 port (Preferably a rear port) and that your USB cable is fine. If iTunes cannot update the phone after download or download is corrupt, when trying to update choose “Download Only” rather than “Download and Update”, once the download is complete you should be able to update no problem.

    it was USB devices for me. (the reason it wouldn’t restore) Had a monitor and a usb keyboard hooked up. unhooked both and it’s working on installing now. hope that helps. If not make sure that OS X is up to date.

      Leave it until tomorrow – I’ve tried since they released the update and all I keep getting is the error 3200. Apple will probably address these issues hopefully tomorrow (wishful thinking?!?

    downloaded on my mac fine, then when I go to update my iphone it starts the process but then an error message pops up.

    i was getting the same error message so i went back into where i keep the setup for itunes and opened it, it unpacked some items and then told me i had a newer version already. then i tried to update again and it worked like a charm.

    mine would not install with error 3200. I took the “download” option rather than the “download and install” option. tried installing but got error 3200. Tried with airport mode on, still got 3200 code. Removed / Replaced USB connection. Still 3200.Restarted PC. Installed fine.

      I had two failure attempts with my ipad 2. i went to the link were i followed the instructions. I had to update my operating system(critical updates only), unplugged unnecessary usb devices and plugged my ipad into a usb port in the rear of my pc and the install worked!!!

    I just got IOS5…….but no imessage, photo editing, siri for iphone 3gs?…….. correct me if I’m wrong……..I knew about siri so pleased vlingo just made all features free! Another annoying thing is newstand will not go into a folder.  Looks better all round though and notifications are cool………maybe imessage and photo editing are hiding somewhere.

        iMessage is in settings, go to messages click on it. When it opens up there is a switch to turn it on or off. You can then set it up how you would like.

      Siri is only available on the iPhone 4s and not included in the iOS 5 update. 
      I’m having continuous Error 3200 messages – seems like it’s due to server overload according to a couple of other websites which Apple are looking in to.

    Mine didn’t download until I removed all other usb cables from the back of my iMac, then restarted the computer and iTunes.  Worked like a charm after that!

      This may sound stupid, but you have to download the new version first. What I think you probably did. Then you must download to your phone..

      Figured out the problem Itunes was having issues with the previous jailbreak so put the ipad in DFU and mode and did a restore/update all works fine nows

    I just upgraded two iphone 4 and all went smoothly… Did some preparation before upgrading

    1. Upgraded my OS
    2. Double checked for latest version of iTunes
    3. Upgraded my antivirus
    4. Restarted my windows PC (I’m on Win 7 Ultimate, using Microsoft security essential antivirus)
    After this I did following to upgrade to ios5. I’ve iPhone4

    1. Removed passcode lock from my iphone
    2. Reset autolock to ‘Never’
    3. Restarted my iPhone
    4. Charged it to 100%
    5. Connected iPhone to my PC
    6. iTunes asked option to upgrade. I choosed download only. File download (~780MB) took 12-15 mins on my BB
    7. Disconnected the iPhone from my pc and restarted my PC
    8. Connected the iPhone, this time it asked to upgrade. I hit the upgrade button and followed the on screen instruction. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR OR YOUR PC DURING THE UPGRADE PROCESS
    9. The upgrade took 12-15 mins and another 2-3 mins to setup the phone
    10. Disconnected the iPhone from PC and restarted the PC and followed all of the steps again for another iPhone.

    I hope this helps… Enjoying iOS5 now 🙂
